We are looking forward to meet a lot of passionate developers, free software enthusiasts, GIS experts and hackers!

The venue is the same as the South Tyrol Free Software Conference : the TIS Innovation park in Bolzano.

We will start on Monday, November 14th at 9:00 AM (CET) and choose what to prioritize before the real work begins. Expect to find someone hanging around there until 6:00 PM. The same will happen on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

There is no hard schedule, since we hope that a lot of people will join us and bring their expertise to the community: there will be talks, coding sessions, and most of all a lot of fun :-).

SFSCon will take place on Friday, so we are not planning anything for November the 18th. There will be a lot of interesting talks and, at the end of the day, one about mixare!

Please let us know in the comments or via mail if you want to join us. If you are planning to travel from afar we could help you find an hotel in the neighbourhood of Bolzano, just let us know.

P.S. Have you circled the new google+ page of mixare?

Join us for the mixare 1.0 hackathon http://www.mixare.org/2011/10/mixare-1-0-hackathon/ http://www.mixare.org/2011/10/mixare-1-0-hackathon/#respond Tue, 18 Oct 2011 12:37:27 +0000 http://www.mixare.org/?p=646 Read More →]]> Following the success of the development sprint made last year during the SFSCon in Bolzano we have bigger plans for 2011!

Mixare for android has grown up in the past months, and nowadays supports many devices, many different releases of Android (including 3.x/Honeycomb since release 0.7) and data formats.

The time has come for a 1.0 release!

But since there are a few minor annoyances and bugs, and a new major release of Android (4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich) is about to be released, we want to make sure that Mixare is ready for such a milestone.

You are welcome to join us for the mixare 1.0 hackathon, that will take place in Bolzano the week of the SFSCon (i.e. working week 46, from 14/11/2011 to 18/11/2011). The focus will be on closing existing issues, the wordpress plugin and improving mixare user experience.

If you intend to participate please contact us at info@mixare.org or leave a comment here on the blog. We will publish more details about the event as soon as they are finalized.

See you soon in Bolzano!

A lot of things, among which…

a web-based and open source POIs creation tool for mixare! πŸ™‚

Soon everyone will be able to create own collections of Point of Interests, and choose whether they are public or private.

This will work from the mixare website itself or on any wordpress-powered website around the globe. Of course the source code will be released on our github repository as free software.

While we finalize the code for release, please share in the comments what you would like to do with it!

iPhone version of mixare available in the App-Store http://www.mixare.org/2010/12/iphone-version-of-mixare-available-in-the-app-store/ http://www.mixare.org/2010/12/iphone-version-of-mixare-available-in-the-app-store/#comments Fri, 17 Dec 2010 15:11:03 +0000 http://www.mixare.org/?p=610 Read More →]]> We are glad to announce, that mixare is now available for the iPhone 4 and 3GS (under the GPLv3)!
If you have such a iOS device please get it from the app store.
http://itunes.apple.com/app/mixare/id399622910?mt=8
http://itunes.com/apps/mixare (will open iTunes or appstore)

If anyone have some experience with Objektive-C, please checkout the code at github (https://github.com/mixare/mixare-iphone) – for some technical reasons, the source code and structure is different from the android version.
But we have prepared a wikipage (http://code.google.com/p/mixare/wiki/FileResponsibility) which describes the classes of the project.

The iPhone does not include all functionalities (yet) as the android version does, so feel free toΒ  support us implementing them! πŸ˜‰

And now the obligatory screenshots! πŸ™‚

Screenshot of mixare during my last mountain trip.

It was also wonderful to welcome Miriam and Mixare in the community and to host them in Bolzano for the first “Mixare sprint” ever. An important outcome of the sprint has been a Roadmap for the upcoming releases of mixare, an lots of fun, as you can see in the image below. (in case you’re wondering it’s me (Daniele), Miriam and Hannes from left to right).
Mixare sprint

Hannes lately implemented a lot of new features that were listed in the Roadmap, and I just made available a new apk on our google code page. The contributions have been merged in the main repository a few moments ago, and the changelog is in the message that Hannes sent to our mailing list. You can get an overview of the new features by looking at the following pictures and videos that Hannes made and shared.

But that’s not the topic for today’s post. The topic is that we want to welcome Miriam in our community!

Miriam will work on the integration of twitter (and in general in the integration of additional data services) in mixare, this will be the theme of her Thesis at the faculty of computer science of the free University of Bolzano.

She has been given rights to manage the Issue tracker queue and will use it as a roadmap for her efforts, so if you have some proposals or bug reports report it there (or star an existing issue so that it gets more priority).

We expect to release a new version of mixare in the market (and in the svn repository) shortly that will be faster, more polished and … better!

Hearthly welcome Miriam!

The future looks bright http://www.mixare.org/2010/04/the-future-looks-bright/ http://www.mixare.org/2010/04/the-future-looks-bright/#respond Thu, 22 Apr 2010 16:09:34 +0000 http://www.mixare.org/?p=514 Read More →]]> We have great news to announce! Yesterday evening Peer GmbH and R3 GIS GmbH from Merano chose to join their efforts to help mixare grow at even a faster pace.
The expertise of R3 GIS about Geographic Information Systems, Digital Terrain Models, and GPS knowledge is a perfect fit for the User Experience knowledge of Peer internet solutions.
The companies agreed on a concrete roadmap for the next few months, that is listed below:

bugfixes

  • download retries
  • GPS fix
  • various Nullpointer exceptions fixes

Improvements

  • Compass precision: investigation of possible corrections / datasources
  • Compass correction by the means of accelerometer readings?
  • GPS precision (altitude): investigation of possible corrections / datasources
  • GPS precision (overall): integration of DGPS services? WAAS? Other possible services
  • Integration with high precision DTM (Digital Terrain Model) and visibility analysis
  • Marker display enhancements related to precision and distance
  • Additional handling of polylines and polygons
  • Additional standardized data-format support (XML based)
  • User Interface enhancements: menu support, better feedback to the user
  • Warnings in case of issues with data reliability (magnetic field distortions, old/wrong GPS fix). Maybe a diagnostic mode for advanced users?
  • Social network integration: twitter with support for login, timeline, lists, search. Maybe send geotagged tweets?
  • Support for local data sources (not in terms of URI, but rather collection of POIs)

R3 GIS GmbH and Peer GmbH are committed to open source. The project keeps its GPLv3 license, all code contributions will be put in the public repository and the discussion will happen in the public development mailing list, so that everyone is able to chime in and participate.

We are thrilled to see the mixare community grow, and that companies with great expertise join the project!

Demo launcher available http://www.mixare.org/2010/04/demo-launcher-available/ http://www.mixare.org/2010/04/demo-launcher-available/#comments Thu, 08 Apr 2010 08:52:59 +0000 http://www.mixare.org/?p=480 Read More →]]> This post is mainly for developers interested in how to interact with Mixare.

A new apk has just been uploaded to the google code site. It will interact with mixare in several ways that I’ll describe in this post. You can get it here. Its sources are available under the GPLv3 license in the SVN repository of the project.

What this launcher shows is:

  • How to check if mixare is installed on the phone, and go to the market otherwise.
  • How to check if the GPS is enabled, and go to the system settings otherwise.
  • Pass the url of a really simple REST service that will return four points around you to mixare.

As you can see in the screenshot below, it will also show the url that gets called, so that you can point you browser to it and see how the JSON answer looks like.

By clicking the “CLICK ME” button mixare will be launched and you will see four points around you. These points do not reflect anything real in you neighbourhood but should point towards North, East, South and West.

This launcher is an example of use case 3 as shown on the usage page. Please bear in mind that while this launcher is GPL (and so should be anything that will be developed on its base) you are allowed to develop you own launcher that interacts with mixare whithout releasing the sources for it (for instance if you want to protect your data).

We think it’s time to add some data providers to mixare, so that you will be able to enjoy it even more!
The first step is of course to choose which data providers are interesting. We named a few in this thread of our Google Discussion Group.

We are looking forward to hearing from you which one among:

would be you favourite new data provider in a future update of mixare.

Feel free to vote here with a comment or in the thread!

Of course any further proposal is welcome as well!
