All digital compasses are very sensitive to electrical & magnetic noise, and even movement, usually much more than traditional compasses. Like “Cuddly” said, there are ways to make it less sensitive, based on your exact location on the planet (and altitude), but its never going to be perfect. You just have to use the compass with the knowledge that it is only a guide and not very accurate.

In Android you can use the GeomagneticField class to correct some of this. It has also just been updated to the 2010 geomagnetic model: http://github.com/android/platform_frameworks_base/commit/a2d776b2d36b38d94a30fc5692fd71ce9697fe9c
